Satu grew up in a small village in Finland, surrounded by forests and lakes. She learnt to play the flute in her early teens, always keen to draw and paint. She studied at the Orivesi College of Arts she moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where she worked in a chocolate factory and then became a home help in Gamla Stan.

Satu returned to Finland after she found interest in the graphic design studies in Rovaniemi, Lapland. She graduated and she moved to London, England. Satu took courses in secretarial skills and computing, upgrading her graphic designer’s tools. In the early days of the computing technology, she developed her skills in desktop publishing by working first in a small company. She continued her career in the department of creative services at IPC Magazines and after 5 years, she moved on to work at the London Metropolitan University, where her 20 years as a graphic designer ended in 2009. The voluntary redundancy package she was awarded gave Satu the opportunity to begin another chapter in the fairy tale of her life.

It was the amazing experience in the Healing Fields at the WOMAD Festival, that sparked Satu’s interest into the healing, transcending and renewing properties of The Sound. Satu discovered a tipi tucked in the corner of the woods, with a sound bath in progress – those strange, shiny metal discs hanging from the stands, were the gongs – played so delicately, pianissimo, sometimes with crashing crescendos, melting into an ocean of sound, created solely by a man dressed in white, playing the gongs.

Laying herself down in the cooling shade of the tipi, Satu began to feel part of the universe, with strange, magical energies flowing around and within her… She realised that the sounds may have a positive effect on her state of mind and body, which, she observed, was in need of balancing and harmonising. Satu spent the whole afternoon behind that gong bath tipi, cocooned in the powerful sounds of the gongs. The air was filled with beautiful vibrations, resonating with her. After the festival, her aim was to go on exploring the creation of these wonderful sounds.

Satu discovered the art of playing the Himalayan singing bowls on a workshop run by Michael Ormiston and Candida Valentino. After various introductory courses in other areas of sound therapy, Satu studied at The British Academy of Sound Therapy and learned to play the gongs, drums and chant with the professional guidance of the tutors Lyz Cooper and Clifford Sax – she was certified as a Sound Therapist in 2011.

Satu has taken part in various workshops, including the gong master Sheila Whittaker’s Gong Intensive at The College of Sound Healing and with the grand gong masters Don Conreaux, Tom Soltron and Abby delSol.

Since then, Satu has been giving gong baths for groups and individuals at various festivals and events, including Crisis at Christmas, Womad festival, Barefoot, Over the Moon festival, Lodestar, Aespia, Secret Garden Party, The Crow Festival and annually at The Healing Weekend in Somerset, UK.

Satu with Sound Intent has been part of various yoga and healing retreats, giving gong bath demonstrations at workshops and performing at various charity events and private parties.
